“It’s a funny thing about coming home. Looks the same, smells the same, feels the same. You’ll realize what’s changed is you.”
-Benjamin Button, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)-
Happy New Year!
I will continue the 30 Days Film Challenge. Once again, I remind you that you can join this challenge just by grabbing the picture below. In this part, I will answer the questions from number 16 to number 30 and also additional comment related to my answers.
Day 16 – The last film you saw in cinemas
The last film I saw in cinemas is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016).
Day 17 – The best film you saw during last year
I have a lot of titles popping out on top of my head, but I can mention two of them as they are very memorable and quite give a very deep impression for along time. They are The Lobster (2015) and The Tribe (2014). If I have to choose one, then I have to go with The Tribe (2014). I watched both of these titles on the screening held by The Phoenix, Southampton’s Independent Film Society and also one of the biggest film society in the UK. You can check their website here. The Lobster (2015) offers a very interesting premise for the plot, here I quote from IMDB: “In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.” The main character decided to be a lobster if he failed to find his soulmate. While The Tribe (2014) is a Ukrainian film which has no single line of spoken script during the film. Why? Because all of the casts are deaf-mute and they are talking with Ukrainian Sign Language. That’s the magic of this film. You don’t know a single word they said (even though you are familiar with American/British/French Sign Language, you may find it difficult to follow because the Ukrainian Sign Language is not very similar to ASL/BSL/LSF), but you know exactly what is happening during the film. You feel the anger, the shame, and also the fear. Indeed, a very clever film and very well-presented. Just for a precaution, it may not suitable for a person under 18. This is an example of a very extraordinary film-making creativity and intelligence.
Day 18 – A film that disappointed you the most
A lot of disappointing films, especially if the films are the adaptation of bestseller novels or popular animes or TV series. But there is one film that basically an original screenplay that makes me totally disappointed. The film is Lucy (2014). I was having a very high hope with Scarlett Johansson in this film. Her performances as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow in Marvel Cinematic Universe films and also as Samantha in Her are exceptional. Turns out it is one of the dumbest science fiction film and a very obvious way to exploit Scarlett Johansson’s name to gain million of dollars.
Day 19 – Your favourite actor
Favourite actor and actress are the hardest to answer because I don’t have any particular favouritism towards any individual. I decide to make it a little bit systematic. From all of the film titles which I have mentioned during this challenge, there are two films where Brad Pitt becomes the actor in leading role, Se7en (1995) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). But to think about it, Brad Pitt had played in numerous excellent movies, for example, Twelve Monkeys (1995), Meet Joe Black (1998), Fight Club (1999), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Burn After Reading (2008), Inglourious Basterds (2009), Moneyball (2011), Fury (2014), etc. So this is the answer, Brad Pitt.
Day 20 – Your favourite actress
My favourite actress, I’ll just go with Scarlett Johansson. Eventhough the Lucy (2014) is not the greatest act from her.
Day 21 – The most overrated film
A lot of people are going to kill me because I pick Pulp Fiction (1996).
Day 22 – The most underrated film
When I watched this movie, I thought it was a very excellent film. After I checked the internet, I was shocked. The Space Station 76 (2014) is a retrofuturistic portrayal of the galactic exploration. It is unique, funny in its way, and also strange. Tell me what you think about this film.
Day 23 – Your favourite character from any film
Hannibal Lecter, either the senior version of him in The Silence of The Lambs (1991) or the junior version of him in Hannibal Rising (2007).
Day 24 – Favourite documentary
I don’t usually watch documentary films and hence I don’t have many references about documentaries. Maybe, I can suggest one the most memorable one for me, The Act of Killing (2012). It covers a very controversial topic and please find the history and the facts straight first before watching this film. If you are a fan of the style of this documentary, you can also check The Look of Silence (2014), which is directed by the same person.
Day 25 – A film that no one would expect you to love
I don’t know how to answer this question because generally I can watch all kind of film genres although personally I am least likely to watch a film about teenage romance. Even I think, my close friends know about this. However, The Way He Looks (2014) is exceptionally amazing. Wonder why? Find out by yourself.
Day 26 – A film that is a guilty pleasure
Mean Girls, I don’t have any particular reason why I love this film. I just love it. I don’t normally like watching chick flick films, but this one is entertaining and the kind of film which I can watch it again and again.
Day 27 – Favourite classic film
The outstanding film 12 Angry Men has to be included in this list. I love the simplicity of the idea. Twelve people sit in a room and discussing every possibilities of a murder case. Sounds boring? I guarantee you, it surely does not.
Day 28 – Film with the best soundtrack
I watch the film three times just to hear the soundtracks.
Day 29 – A film that changed your opinion about something
It has a very similar setting to the 12 Angry Men (1957). It is a story about a small group of people having a conversation in the living room about religion, faith, and divinity. Before you watched this film, please have a grasp on your personal belief and your faith.
Day 30 – Your least favourite film
The whole Twilight Saga series. No need to explain. I don’t even care enough to put the links for them.
Finally, I make it to the end. So, how about your list?
“The past is just a story we tell ourselves.”
